On this day in 1776, a 2,000-pound now known as the “Liberty Bell” rang out from the tower of the Pennsylvania State House (now Independence Hall) in Philadelphia, summoning citizens to the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence.
The Wall Street Journal was first published in 1889.
Alec Waugh, the English novelist and travel writer, was born on this day in 1898. His book The Loom of Youth was so controversial at the time (it openly mentioned homosexual relationships between boys) that Alec remains the only former pupil to be expelled from the school old boys society. It was also a best seller.
In 1918, Ernest Hemingway was severely wounded while carrying a companion to safety on the Austro-Italian front during World War I. Hemingway, working as a Red Cross ambulance driver, was decorated for his heroism and sent home.
