I wanted to be a ship's cook but I couldn't resist opening doors. These led me from the back streets of Liverpool to a hospital kitchen, a very dirty hotel in Wales and eventually a University degree without really knowing why. I opened the teaching door, another door that led me into a ceilidh band, and then, at last, something I wanted even more than being a ship's cook: writing.
